In 1493 Christopher Columbus, sailing off the coast of the Dominican Republic, reported that he had sighted three mermaids and that they were "not as beautiful as they had been painted."

Later he realized that he had seen these creatures before and they were manatees.     :)

A father took his little girl to see a new litter of puppies.  When they arrived home, the little girl told her mother, "Mommy, we saw two girl puppies and two boy puppies!"

"How could you tell?" asked the mom.

"Daddy picked them up and looked underneath.  It's printed on the bottom!"
